Tombokai Pretoria

We are a full member branch of the International Batto-Do Federation, under the guidance of Dave Drawdy sensei, who is a director of the Capital Area Budokai and Dojocho of the Virginia Kenkonkai. Drawdy sensei is Nanadan (7th dan) Renshi in Nakamura Ryu Battodo and a Shibucho (branch chief) in the International Batto Do Federation.
Our annual participation in the Nakamura Ryu Taikai in Tsurumi, Japan is a highlight on our calendar.
Batto, like iai, is a 'drawing sword' art that begins and ends with the sword in the saya. Nakamura Ryu grew from basic swordsmanship for military officers taught at the Toyama Military Academy in the late 1920's, although it has deep roots in several koryu, or older styles. Emphasis is on focus and control, effective technique, and spirit.
Nakamura Taizaburō sensei was born in 1912 in Yamagata Prefecture. He resided in Tsurumi, Yokohama, where he presided over the International Iai-Battōdō Federation and taught battōdō for the Kakuseikai until his death in 2003. Nakamura sensei was awarded 10th dan hanshi battōdō by the International Martial Arts Federation, 7th dan kyoshi by the All Japan Kendō Federation, 8th dan hanshi, Jukendō and 8th dan hanshi, Tankendō. In 1973 he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure in recognition for his services in promoting the martial arts.
